Every guitarist has a guitar hero – someone whose style, sound, and technique are a constant source of inspiration. Whilst I can’t help you play like Jimi Hendrix, for that you are going to have to practise, it’s worth remembering that a lot of these guys had some help from the effects pedals they used.
Effects pedals, of course, come in a huge range of variants, and ultimately you should experiment in order to achieve the perfect sound for you. However, if you want to sound like one of your heroes, you should have a look at what equipment they use to achieve their sound. If they used a solid state amp that it’s worth finding out what brand or plugin they used when practising.
Luckily for you, we’ve put together a guide to the pedals and other effects used by 9 of our own guitar heroes.
Of course, all these guys are (or were) famous musicians that could afford to splash out on the latest effects and pedals, and your budget might not stretch to completely replicating their set-ups. Remember, though, that a lot of these guitarists actually use vintage pedals, and nowadays a simple, classic pedal need not cost the earth.
Whilst it can be tempting to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest equipment, my advice would be to keep it simple – learning how to use one effect well is going to sound better than confusing yourself trying to completely replicate a particular sound.
