Being told you sound like The Strokes would be daunting for most bands but Howler’s Jordan Gatesmith takes it as a compliment. It’s easy to hear why the comparisons have been made with their sharp, fuzzy sound, but there’s also the coincidence of them being signed by the same bloke who signed The Strokes, and onto the same label, Rough Trade.
Gatesmith, Howler’s lead singer and guitarist, has been in a few other bands of various natures in their hometown of Minneapolis before settling on Howler with a current line-up of Ian Nygaard (Guitar), Max Petrek (Bass) and Rory MacMurdo (Drums).
Howler’s debut album came out in January 2012 to great critical acclaim and saw the band tour the UK with The Vaccines as well as embark on their own headline tour and headline the NME Generation Next Tour.
2014 is already looking like an exciting year for Howler, having recently released a sample of their upcoming second album; World of Joy as well as announcing plenty of dates for the UK and Europe.
