Changüí Majadero is the East LA-based band devoted to spreading the joys of changüí, the granddaddy of salsa, the music of bucolic Caribbean-steeped Eastern Cuba. Both the music and the band have a raw intensity and grace that lovers of folk music, jazz, and blues listeners will appreciate. Gabriel Garcia, guitarist, tresero, and founder of Changüí Majadero, was born in Los Angeles to music-steeped Mexican emigres.(His grandmother was a prominent opera singer and his father composes Mexican political/social corridos. Add to that, that Garcia was on the Mexican Junior Olympics Boxing Team plus obtaining a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology, and you have the perfect beginnings of a unique and joyful band.
