How did the festival start, what inspired you to create Sonder Festival?
SONDER Festival was created through a Facebook chat about the lack of opportunities for great bands across our city between myself and Co creator Gav Pettifor. We both had the same opinion that it was more about ticket sales than quality music and we decided that we should try to do something against that. I knew that an old friend of mine also was throwing around the idea of creating a festival and one message later Joe Maguire joined the team.
What is new for this year’s festival?
This year’s festival is a little more organised than the working chaos of our fringe festival last November. That event was basically just for us to work out some kinks and find out what elements and ideas actually worked. The comedy aspect of the festival really worked and this year we have Nathan Caton as our headline comedian in Jimmys on the Sunday. We know that Jimmys will be full and sold out pretty early so if anyone is planning coming along to see him, they need to get there early.
The festival takes place in venues across Manchester could you tell us a bit about some of the venues?
This year we have seven venues involved, The Castle, The Whiskey Jar, Gullivers, Jimmys, The Ruby Lounge, Soup Kitchen and Aatma. We are bowled over by the support we have had from these venues and they are all a credit to the creative scene of this city. I put my first event on in Manchester at Aatma so I always love going to gigs in that venue.
How do people get tickets for the event?
Tickets are priced at £10 per day or just £15 for the full 3 days. They can be purchased through our ticketing partners Skiddle. (https://www.skiddle.com/festivals/sonder-festival/)
What makes Sonder Festival stand out from the slew of other Manchester festivals that are out there?
I really think that each festival in this city has its own place and adds to what makes Manchester such a fantastic city for live music. At SONDER we try to go against the grain a little and not book acts that you would see at every festival. This year we have some truly amazing acts who are all headline worthy from The Lottery Winners, Louise Distras, Elevant, Camens, Syd.31, In Search of Sun, Rime Suspex, Scarlet, Lady Ice and Prose to just name a few.
Who are you looking forward to seeing perform, I know that you will be busy but will you actually get a chance to catch a few acts of the day?
I’m really excited to see Kata Rayna, Scarlet and LIINES. Those three acts really impressed me and I’ve already made sure that I will be working in the venues that they are playing!
Where do you hope to take Sonder Festival in the future?
SONDER 2018 will be a lot more comedy and art focused, I also really want to try and book one of my favourite musicians Karima Francis but we will see how that goes.
