Q&A : ReverbNation Competition Winners Wild Horse

For those readers that haven’t heard of you before could you tell us a bit about yourself your story?

We are Wild Horse from Heathfield, which is a small town just outside of Brighton. We consist of brothers Jack Baldwin (vocals, guitar, bass, keys) and Henry Baldwin (guitar, vocals, harmonica, keys, bass) and our friend Ed Barnes (Drums and Percussion). We formed back in 2013 when we were all around 11 – 13. Our latest album, (3rd),  “Dance!! Like An Animal” is available everywhere now! We like to write songs which are versatile and show our large, diverse range of influences and put on energetic live shows with the goal of leaving everyone in the room feeling that it was worth their time to come out and watch us and hopefully want to see us again.

Who inspired you to get on stage?

It would have to be the classics (The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, BB King, Muddy Waters etc) that really got us passionate about getting up on stage and playing our hearts out to people. To be honest, we are all pretty big attention seekers (but in a good way we hope!) so we immediately felt at home on stage. Of course, we do not expect to achieve anything near what these classic bands have achieved but we definitely feel that we have an exciting spark when we play together, especially live to an audience.

Are there any particular artists or albums or artists that have stuck with you over the years?

Fleetwood Mac – Rumours, The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers, Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon, Loyle Carner – Yesterday’s Gone, Kendrick Lamar – Damn

Where do you draw from when writing lyrics?

We always try to write about things which not only relate to us but also relate to other people so we feel the only true place we can draw from in terms of our lyrics is from within ourselves,

Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the Reverbnation winning track “Frustrations”?

When writing for our latest album “Dance!! Like An Animal”, I (Jack) had a massive writer’s block for about 6 months but then one day out of the blue I wrote the riff for the track and knew straight away I was back into a creative streak. I also knew what the song had to be about, so I sat down and wrote the lyrics with help from Henry and bish bosh bish…Frustrations was written.

How has the reception been to your 3rd album “Dance!! Like An Animal”?

It’s been terrific! I would say our most well received album to date. I think people appreciated the honesty of the tracks and the diversity of song styles. Both of these things are explored further in our new album (it’s initials are “H.W.A.W.H.A.W.A.T.P.O.P.C” see if you can guess the title!) which is being written right now

What do you think is missing from today’s music industry?

Honesty and self-reflection. Because of things like social media (Instagram in particular) people have become quite narcissistic and seem to think they’re God’s gift – famous musicians are very guilty of this. It is hard to write songs that criticise society and the way you yourself act and how you could help improve yourself and society when you have this mindset.

Here at Artistic Echoes we always on the lookout for new artists do you have anyone to recommend?

Of course! There’s so many to choose from but these are just a few:

Tarot Rats – UK (https://twitter.com/tarot_rats)

Maneat Grass – UK (https://twitter.com/ManeatGrass)

Tough On Friday – US (https://twitter.com/ToughOnFridays)

These bands are all uniquely special and it’s just a bonus they’re all lovely people!

What plans do you have for the rest of the year?

Gigs. Lots of gigs. Writing. Lots of writing. hopefully we will be able to release our upcoming album which takes a different turn to anything we’ve done before this year, so keep an eye out.
