Q&A: ReverbNation Competition Winner Jeanne Christie – I Am Sovereign

For those people that haven’t heard of you before could you tell us a bit about yourself your story?

I was always attracted to performing and entered a singing competition at Butlins when I was 7 – I didn’t win anything, but I had caught the bug! My grandmother was in a duo with her sister (The Blond Bombshells), a Family Tree search also showed a relationship to Vesta Tilley, a music hall soubrette, – so it must be in the genes! Which I passed on to my son David Drinkel (a brilliant singer/keyboardist),  And my daughters Lisa Molyneux and Lori Holland, a singing teacher. I wrote my first song at 13 and sang it in a music Recital.

Who inspired you to get on stage and perform?

I was inspired by Lulu, but I think the most inspirational female vocalist in the world is TINA TURNER – I love her energy, and her voice is incredible! With the song “I Am Sovereign”, I tried to capture her Attitude!

I am inspired by things that go on around me, and I wrote that one after reading about a woman who was about to be stoned to death for adultery, after being raped! The injustice of that really struck me.

Are there any particular albums or artists that have stuck with you and influenced your sound?

I love discos and write 4 different genres, including  House tracks, but I would like to see music being kept as ‘Live ‘ as possible. Nothing can replace the Buzz of gigging and the excitement of watching a Live Act! I try to change my vocal style to suit the song I am recording, so I am not really influenced by any 1 person.

What inspired the video to “I Am Sovereign”?

All my videos are created by the novelist William Demarest, who wrote The Earth Code – At Hand. He lives in Florida, and I met him online quite by accident, after reading his novel. The video for “I Am Sovereign” probably reflects his political views.

What’s the most interesting venue you have performed at?

I was in the group Genetix for 10 years with family members, working all over the U.K. We worked with many top acts and stars at a lot of large clubs, under management to Leo Management. Gary Barlow used to be a support act for our group!

Here at Artistic Echoes, we are always on the lookout for new artists do you have anyone to recommend?

A band to look out for in the future is Dirty Vertebrae, they are brilliant

What plans do you have for the rest of the year?

We are now recording our own songs with more family members as FAM for LP RECORDS. Hopefully, we will have several tracks on iTunes/Spotify etc very shortly.
