Hi, How’s it going? For those people that haven’t heard of Dogtooth could you tell us a bit about the band? Your story?
John:- Craig and I met by chance at the annual Millport Scooter Rally in August 2013 when I was 11 and Craig just turned 12! Both into the same music, we hit it off straight away so we decided to meet up every Saturday to practise together. We met Robert 8 months later when we asked him to play drums at our rehearsals for a couple of hours. Almost 7 years later he’s still here!
Dogtooth are John Hewitson – Lead guitar/vocals, Craig Morrison – Bass, Robert Lang – Drums/backing vocals.
It’s quite an uncertain time for musicians at the moment, how have you coped with the lockdown and current restrictions?
Lockdown has been really quite devastating to all involved in the music industry from the artists themselves to the studios, venues, sound engineers, photographers you name it, we have all taken a hit! Performing live is what we like to do most and what we do best – so it’s been a big miss for all three of us!
We have managed a few rehearsals after the restrictions were lifted and it felt great to be back! All of our live performances for the year have been either cancelled or postponed, which is pretty crap but outwith our control. It’s going to be one big party when folk can get out to live gigs again!!
Who inspired you to get on stage and perform?
My influences have got to be Noel Gallagher (it was listening to Oasis that made me want to play guitar), Paul Weller, John Squire, Johnny Marr and Luke Pritchard.
Are there any particular artists or albums that have inspired your style?
The Blinders, The Clash, The Jam and Oasis. The Blinders first album Columbia is brilliant and an all-time favourite from The Jam – “In The City”. Quality.

Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the Reverbnation winning track ‘Cut’?
Writing is always a joint effort from all three of us. One of us comes up with an idea that we share, we add to it, bounce it around for a bit until it fits and we’re happy with it. ‘Cut’ was recorded at 7 West Studios in Glasgow.
What are some of the most interesting places you have performed?
We have been very fortunate to have played at many iconic venues across the country. Our all-time favourites, of course, would be the famous Glasgow Barrowlands and The Cavern Lounge, Liverpool. Every gig has something to remember with obviously some better than others! Best feeling ever is when the crowd are enjoying your performance!
Do you have any stories from the road?
Eh… plenty but none that are suitable to share!
Here at Artistic Echoes, we are always on the lookout for new music do you have anyone to recommend?
Nothing better than discovering new bands is there?! When we’re not gigging ourselves that’s exactly what I love to do! Caught some belters on an off chance gig in Glasgow! If I like it I listen to it. There are so many I wouldn’t know where to start! Glasgow scene is full of good bands right now!
What plans do you have for the rest of the year?
Our new track ‘MONEY’ was already recorded at 7 West Studios before the lockdown was announced in March. We had also done a lot of the groundwork with Stuart Westwood Photography on the video for the track so as soon as restrictions allowed we managed to get that all put together and it’s now very nearly almost good to go so will be released very soon! What a laugh we had with the video, Stuart must’ve been going crazy with us! Funny video but makes a point!
Would be great to be able to tell you that we had a few gigs lined up but unfortunately like everyone else in our position we can’t. A few festivals would’ve been brilliant this year and we can only hope that we will get to perform at some next year.
For now, we will keep on keeping on! Writing, recording whenever we can!
