For those people that haven’t heard of Reptile Room could you tell us a bit about the band, your story?
We are a 3 piece electro-pop band from Atlanta. The three of us grew up together and have had all kinds of musical endeavours. in 2017 we decided to make music together and see what came from that. Once we found our sound, we started making more songs and videos, designing art and creating as much as possible. It’s been a ride!
Who inspired you to get on stage and perform?
We have all been inspired by such a range of artists that it’s hard to name just a few. We each have fairly different tastes and musical backgrounds though, so that makes it interesting when working together. St. Vincent, Radiohead, Diplo, James Blake, SAINt JHN, Lana Del Rey, Muse, FKA Twigs… a few that come to mind off the bat.
Are there any particular artists or albums that have influenced your sound?
I think our sound comes from our blend of different backgrounds. Everything from experimental to classical styles are incorporated into each song. We always want to feel like we’re not just being safe or boring.
When writing songs do you have any songwriting rituals, do you have a particular time/place/mood that you write best in?
It varies – sometimes we sit down as a group and write, sometimes we individually bring ideas to each other.. sometimes a voice memo will turn into a song from a year ago. It all just depends on what’s going on. There have been days where we make it a point to write and nothing comes out the way we like it. Other times we will sit down and come up with 4 or 5 ideas that we all really vibe on. We just try to ride the wave whenever inspiration visits.
Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the ReverbNation winning track Shadows?
It started off as a different song I wrote on piano actually, I was adding some synth tracks to that and found the synth that you hear as Shadows starts. It had a really cool vibe and didn’t quite belong in the song I was working on, so I opened a new project using just the synth and started from there. The “this is how we live now” melody was all I had down but it was stuck in my head for a few days, so I brought the song to Bill and Sami. Bill started adding drums and production to what I had and Sami started writing verse melodies and lyrics. After a few different ideas, all the parts started coming together and clicking and we settled into what the song is now.
What have been some of your favourite venues to perform at?
Terminal West in Atlanta has probably been our favourite so far, but we have played in all kinds of rooms that are awesome.
Here at Artistic Echoes, we are always on the lookout for new artists do you have anyone to recommend?
There’s so many to name, but we’ve recently worked with Damez, and Asco, both are well worth checking out!
What plans do you have for the rest of the year?
We are excited to get back to playing shows after this last year of isolation. We have new music coming out all year, and we plan to start touring in the next few months. It has been nice to work on writing and studio stuff but we are definitely ready to make up for the lack of shows with a busy schedule!
