Q&A: Songdew Competition Winner Kailaz – Set Us Free

For those people that haven’t heard of Kailaz could you tell us a bit about your story?

Expressing feelings is the primary influence of my music. Follow me along on this journey, and let’s go somewhere with it. – Kailaz

Hi everyone, this is Kailaz, I was born in Faridabad, Delhi NCR, India in April 1999. I have always felt a profound connection with music and sound since I was a child. I design all my sounds by myself, expressing my feelings through synthesis and waveforms. My music is currently expressing reminiscing of pastimes with a loved one. Later I plan to direct those emotions into growth and self-discovery.

My mum gifted me a piano when I was 6 years old and at that time, I used to find the melodies of my favourite songs by ear.

I got disconnected from music completely during my middle school as I belong to a middle-class family, as in India, everyone enforces computer science-related coaching institutions and nobody wants their kid to be a musician. I am an open person, so I started studying computer science in-depth and finished Cisco Associate Certification in my high school but deep down I knew that I do not want to live my life being an engineer. And my human design is not meant to fit in any box. I have strong rebellious nature and I believe that the essence of human life is to live and love. So, I took a stand for myself and went all-in for music. I self-taught myself using YouTube, which is a gift for this generation I feel. I always used to play my instrument and compose to escape into the world of self-discovery and expression. Hence, I decided this is what I wanted to build on all my life. I started honing my craft more in high school and currently, I study Music Composition and Music Technology at the Australian Institute of Music, Sydney, Australia.

My love for music has strongly grown from whispering the melodies of my favourites and has flourished into the aesthetic of the music that I now design.

Who inspired you to get into recording music?

Me and my friend paid for a recording studio, and I did not like the mixing and production done by the recording engineer. So, I started learning music production and I loved it, so I decided to study music technology in depth.

Currently, with my composition skills, I practice recording arts, wavetable and analogue synthesis and mixing and production.

Are there any particular artists or albums that have influenced your sound?

Illenium – All his songs are beautifully written and connect with me instantly

Flume – Really loved his album Spring, Epom which explores experimental EDM

Skrybe – This guy is best and integrates cinematic and heavy electronic music in his own unique way

Ella Fitzegerald – Cannot get enough of Jazzy dissonance.

AR Rahman – I love all his compositions and use of world instrumentation.

My sound is influenced by a lot of artists as I am a transnational artist. And currently, I am also on the walk to discover my own sound. So, people can expect to hear something unique in my future projects.

Do you have any songwriting rituals, a particular time/mood/place that suits you?

I like to work in peace, where I can feel deep into my heart and enjoy the creative process. Mostly I work in the studio but frequently I take walks in the park as I love to connect with the earth’s beauty.

I try to write music in all moods, while being upset I write lyrics and compose melodies, and in other moods, I design dark sounds and melodies too. When I am overwhelmed, I design heavy wubs. But at the same time, sometimes I like to sit in peace with emotions and let everything come to ground and transmute all that energy into my composition and songwriting process.

Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the Songdew winning track Set Us Free?

Set Us free is a summer anthem that symbolizes the nostalgic reminiscing of past times, where a lover is feeling one-sided separation while watching a sunset at the beach. The song contains wide atmospheric sounds that bridge the beautiful lyrics by the Melbourne-based artist Jordz to the music. Jordz’s voice provides the perfect texture to the mysterious composition and production. The song has a balance of sad and chill vibes, whereby sweet and heavy sounds tell the story of a melancholy heart.

I created a lot of different versions that played around with different harmonic textures, and later I picked the one that worked well with the whole composition. The song is detailed, and atmospheric sound production has been done.

Could you tell us a bit about some other collaborations you have been working on

I am currently working with a few amazing Melbourne and Sydney based singer/songwriters. I am lucky enough to get an opportunity to work on my dream collaboration with one of the best Australian melodic dubstep composers. My upcoming music is going to evolve and will combine orchestral elements with profound lyrics and heavy electronic sounds.

Aside from that, I have a side artist project where I am exploring different genres of music and have recently created an album with artist Isabelle Cressy, which reimagines ancient devotional mantras, using innovative composition and production styles, as part of a larger audiobook project. This project is known as Vana Madhuryam Sounds. For more information on where to find us, album/audiobook release dates and more, follow us on
