Q&A: ReverbNation Competition Winner Anna Wolf – Gong

For those people that haven’t heard of you before could you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Anna Wolf. I am a solo artist that performs alternative music within the realm of immersive experiences. My music has been described as raw, and visceral and leaves you with a feeling of being heard. I was born in Pretoria South Africa and have been living in London for the past 5 years.

Who inspired you to get on stage and perform?

Music in general really. Seeing other artists perform on stage reminded me of my own creativity. I just love that lyrics transcend and change people’s lives for the better.

Are there any artists or albums that have stuck with you and informed your sound?

Most recently, I can say that bands such as M83, Placebo, and Mac Miller have driven an interesting and new inspiration towards my melodies and phrasing. The only artist that has stuck with me since childhood is Johnny Cash. All his albums have carried me through my various seasons of life.

Could you tell us a bit about your writing process?

Just like every thought is asked and repeated differently in our heads, so is every songwriting process. Sometimes the lyrics come first and other times the chord progression would lead.

Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the ReverbNation Winning track Gong?

This song came to me. Like all songs, I am able to channel what my subconscious is asking or knowing. The first word I wrote was a sound. I imitated a hungry wolf by growling the word, Gong. I kept saying it over and over again and through this process, the rest of the sounds and lyrics were built. I recorded the song with producer Matthew Fink. He is a stellar guy and an absolute genius when it comes to creating something fresh and new. It didn’t take long to give birth to the track. Sometimes a song reveals itself to you and when it does, you better get out of your own way!

Do you have any plans for an album or EP?

Our main focus is to get the music out there to as many people as possible. Playing live shows and doing interviews such as this one helps spread the word. Thank you to you guys!

What are some of your favourite venues to perform at?

Apollo in Hammersmith and Paul Cluver Theatre in Cape Town
