Q&A: Songdew Music Competition Winner Trisha J – Killer Times

For those people who are new to your music, could you tell us a bit about yourself, and your story?

Born into a musical family, I can’t recall ever having a day without music. Growing up, I also enjoyed participating in school and church choirs. There’s something special about the companionship and delight of singing in a group setting. It didn’t take long for me to realize that if I wasn’t immersed in a musical experience, I wasn’t truly alive. Being a musician is my calling.  With an acoustic guitar as a birthday gift, I continued to seek inspiration from excellent songwriters such as Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, and Stevie Nicks, among many others.

Who inspired you to get on stage and perform?

The stage presence of Freddie Mercury, Aretha Franklin, Big Mama Thornton, and Etta James leaves me in constant awe. Every time I get up on stage, I do it for the legacy of all these incredible artists and their music. I am nowhere near close to their energy, but I sure do try.

Are there any artists or albums that have stuck with you and inspired your sound?

I grew up listening to a lot of classics like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel. Ray Davies from The Kinks has been a massive source of inspiration when it comes to witty songwriting. Eventually, my taste took a darker turn and I started enjoying alternative music by The Cure, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, and Tally Hall. All these artists together have helped me create a sound that is both introspective and catchy.

Could you tell us a bit about the writing/recording of the Songdew Music Winning track  “Killer Times”?

“Killer Times” took almost a year to be written and rewritten. It started with a southern gothic song about murdering your lover and turned into an alt/indie bop about my existential crisis.  Having survived a bunch of double-edged experiences, this song perfectly captures my feelings about a constantly changing world. To create a sense of “walking through the apocalypse”, my producer (Penguin Perception) incorporated baby cries, tire screeches, screams, and sirens in the track. Truly, it’s chaos at its finest.

Do you have any plans for an EP or Album?

I do! “Killer Times” happens to be the title track of my debut EP set to release sometime this year. Track Two from the EP “Reality’s A Bore” is already out on all major streaming platforms along with a cool music video.

What are some of your favourite places to perform?

I really enjoy performing in intimate venues where you get a chance to connect with the audience. Asking them to sing along is probably my favourite part!

What has been your favourite moment as a musician so far?

My favourite moment as a musician is definitely having a young girl from The States cover one of my debut singles “Clueless”. I was only sixteen when I released that track, and now that I look back, it’s almost too embarrassing to hear my novice vocals. But I’m still very proud of myself to have released something that was so raw and real to me then, oblivious to the cruel world that would swallow me later. If it wasn’t for the girl from The States covering the very single, I don’t think I would’ve ever realised my own potential. Shoutout to Serena, you make me want to step into my musician shoes confidently every single day.

Here at Artistic Echoes, we are always on the lookout for new artists do you have anyone to recommend?

“Mirror Stories” put out a really cool EP called “30-30” that you ought to check out.

What plans do you have for the rest of the year?

Should the heavens will it, I will soon graduate with a music degree, take up my role as a music educator full-time, start playing at venues around my city more often, and finally release that debut EP. I’m also looking at a lot of exciting collaborations this year! Stay tuned x
