Review:  How I Became a Wave – “Fading Out” – A reflective, emotionally rich piece

Some songs don’t just play—they linger. “Fading Out,” the latest release from Irish singer-songwriter Pat Carey, known as How I Became a Wave, is one of those rare tracks that feels like it’s always been part of you.

Released on September 30, 2015, the song quickly became a fan favorite, especially after standout performances at Cork’s Sounds From A Safe Harbour and Dublin’s National Concert Hall. It’s a reflective, emotionally rich piece that highlights Carey’s talent for cinematic soundscapes and intimate storytelling.

The instrumentation is signature Wave: ambient, reverb-heavy guitars, warm bass, lo-fi drums, and atmospheric synths that envelop Carey’s introspective vocals like morning fog. His voice—soft yet resonant—carries layers of emotion: pain, healing, confusion, and quiet acceptance.

The official music video, featuring rising Irish actor Éanna Grogan, deepens the experience. Grogan’s performance echoes the song’s themes of fragility, memory, and release, making the visual as moving as the audio.

Carey calls the track “an exploration of the boundaries between owning uncomfortable feelings, and being owned by them.” That tension runs throughout, making “Fading Out” more than a song—it’s a moment of reckoning.

With a debut album on the horizon, “Fading Out” feels like a promise. How I Became a Wave is carving out a space that’s introspective, cinematic, and emotionally layered—and it’s one worth watching.
