During these times in society, many people are reaching for some Rock and Roll to get through the roughness. Music in rotation today, may get you through the rough patch, but does it keep you going? That’s for you to decide. But what happened to the real ROCK music? Rock that was strong enough to smooth out rough edges with songs that made you rebel, laugh, cry, and evolve? When guitars sounded like guitars; sex was sex, and booze was booze? Right? Well, I am glad to say that it’s still out there, but with so much commercial, studio-made, Pop music in rotation, today, music journalists must use the cerebral machine from X-MEN to find real Rock music. So, I was delighted to be introduced to the British Rock band, Sweet Crisis. Their debut album Tricks On My Mind dropped 20th August 2021.
Tricks On My Mind contains ten songs that illustrate living life and the mental messages that people inscribe along the way. Each song is fervent and sharply crafted filled with strong compositions, harmonies, vocals, and awesome guitar riffs. And while each track on Tricks On My Mind ties in the threading storyline, the album highlights are: the title track, with its textured layout and energetic core; “Ain’t Got Soul,” containing the sexiest swagger on the entire album with Soul infused Rock, and “Love Me Like Sugar,” filled with vocal swoons, spicy backing vocals, and sexy guitar riffs.

When one hears some music today, it sounds as if it is way past its “best before” date. But not with Sweet Crisis. It is as if the baton has been passed on from the late greats of Rock, on to Sweet Crisis, and this band is keeping the torch burning in homage. This has no expiration date! And while Sweet Crisis has built on the foundation that was laid in Rock, creatively and masterfully, they have their own formula that is elevating that platform. These cats are creating music that will be vaulted up so that generations to come can enjoy real melodies, vocals, instrumentation, and a message – in the same manner, we scurry to put on the black wax created by Queen, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix.
